LIBRARY ACTIVITIES DURING HUMAN RIGHTS MONTH
Human Rights Month is celebrated to
- recognize the rights that all people have, regardless of their race, colour, religion, sex, or other status
- honour those who have fought for liberation and human rights
- promote respect for human rights and dignity
- encourage people to take action to fight for their rights
Why human rights are important in South Africa
The Bill of Rights is the cornerstone of South Africa's democracy. It enshrines the rights of all people in South Africa and affirms the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom. While every person is entitled to these rights, they also have a responsibility to respect these rights.
